Mobcrush demo of Audeze LCD-XC and Audeze EL-8 headphones with Audeze Deckard amplifier against Bowers & Wilkins P7, Audio-Technica ATH-M50X, and Beats by Dre Studio headphones.

Mobcrush Audeze LCD-XC, EL-8, and Deckard Demo

We were recently invited by our friends at Mobcrush headquarters in Santa Monica to give an Audeze demo. The selected choice of headphones were a pair of Audeze LCD-XC and Audeze EL-8 powered by the Audeze Deckard headphone amplifier. We tested against a range of headphones and received outstanding results.

The Chain

  • TIDAL High Fidelity Music Streaming Player.
  • MacBook Pro 15” 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7.
  • Audeze Deckard headphone amplifier combined with USB DAC.

  • Audeze LCD-XC closed back reference grade planar magnetic headphone
  • Audeze EL-8 closed back planar magnetic headphone
  • Bowers & Wilkins P7
  • Audio-Technica ATH-M50X
  • Beats by Dre Studio

Technical Differences

Each Audeze headphone is driven by planar magnetic drivers known to create distinct sound separation between instruments. The other headphones are driven by the more common dynamic driver found in a wide array of headphones.

Each listener was given as much time needed with their favorite tunes on each headphone. While everyone preferred a different flavor of music, the verdicts were all the same.

The Beats by Dre Studio headphones were nominated as the least favored. Though, they brought decent bass, the sound signature was very narrow and unflattering.

It was a very close match between the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X and the Bower & Wilkins P7 headphones. The Bowers & Wilkins P7 were ranked a notch above the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X for having a warmer sound signature. But for about half the price, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X are no slouch.

Next, the Audeze EL-8 came in at 2nd place for having clear instrumental separation and bringing out additional sounds in the mid ranges that were easy to hear and appreciate. It was interesting to note how everyone noticed the midrange became dominated by the treble and bass in the other headphones in comparison with the Audeze EL-8’s.

Coming in at a solid 1st place were the Audeze LCD-XC. In addition to all the features found in the EL-8 comes a large sound stage not found in any other closed-back headphone on the market. The sound separation was more distinctive combined with a large sound stage that presented a sense of realism as you would expect from a live performance.

You could clearly hear where one note starts and one ends. - Mario

I never knew the singer had a lisp until I used these headphones. - Steven

I could spend all day listening to my music collection all over again. - Anonymous

Without a doubt, each headphone lived up to its reputation. We demoed connecting headphones directly to the MacBook’s headphone port and through the deckard amplifier. An amplifier is not required because these are all low impedance headphones (meaning easy to drive), but this resulted in opening up the sound capabilities and added a more exciting, energetic feel.

Needless to say, we now have new fans who have heard the difference.
